Professional soundsystem design for the San Francisco music community.
Project Length: 11 Months (Full System Debut June 2024)
Focus Areas: Speaker Cabinet Design, CNC/Manual Woodworking, Laser Cutting, Acoustic Tuning
Materials: Baltic Birch Cabinets, Steel Grilles, Various Electronics
Fulfilling a longtime dream of mine, I built this 8kW full soundsystem alongside 3 other friends (and many other helping hands) from summer ‘23 to summer ‘24. We used open-source plans as the foundation for our own customized subwoofer (Paraflex) and LF/HF top (SyntripP) cabinet design. I owned development of the 3D CAD, product design tweaks like component additions, redesigns, and original grilles. Other members of the team managed electrical system design and sourcing, including a custom power/amp rack to run everything.
During the build, responsibilities were largely shared. Cabinet panels were milled using a friend’s ShopBot Wood CNC, phase plugs for the tops were 3D printed in-house, and the laser cutting of the grilles was outsourced to an external shop. All final construction was done in-house at various locations (3 garages, 1 shop - thanks Sam!) around the Bay Area, and final system tuning happened at the Loom in Oakland, courtesy of Mike L.
Today our soundsystem is fully functional, tuned like a dream, and available for rent. We have supported many events in the SF dance music community, as well as corporate events such as the SignalFire Disrupt after party.
